Abstract
The proposal aims to recover some reading keys of the book Regretting Motherhood. Wenn Mütter bereuen by Orna Donath (2016) from the story developed by the film The Lost Daughter by Maggie Gyllenhaal (2021). Donath’s research starts from reflecting on a phenomenon that many women experience, but which is not talked about: recognizing themselves as regretting mothers. The analysis follows the story of Leda, an Italian literature professor who, after a random encounter with a young mother, recalls and updates her own motherhood. The essay reviews the relationship of women with themselves as mothers, considering her role, but also the myths that link motherhood with an inexorable destiny for women.
