Abstract

The documentary by Werner Herzog entitled Cave of forgotten dreams shows the works of art discovered on the walls of the Chauvet cave, along with the scientific account about the dawn of manhood. Thus, it becomes a good occasion to reflect on the beginnings of symbolic activity and its structural effects on “the soul of the modern man”. With this purpose, the paper combines some concepts developed by Jacques Lacan – the symbolic, the extimate, sublimation – with the post-metaphysical conception of representation, according to Jean-Luc Nancy. Also, the film provides a certain view of the contemporary world, allowing us to deduce some ethical implications.
